What are the benefits of live-in care work for the carer?
Most people will at some time in their lives, make a list of what they want from a job. What is the perfect job for them at that time in their life? This will differ from person to person and will even change as we get older.
Making a career from live-in care has several advantages and benefits, and is something that you should look at, whether you are starting out on a career or changing direction.
You’ll make a difference in someone’s life
Live-in care can be one of the most rewarding things a person can do. While you are not ‘saving the world’ you will be making a difference in the life of one person at a time. While at times live-in care can be frustrating, it can lead to a beautiful relationship between you and your client. There are many carers who keep in contact with family long after they have moved on to another placement.
You’ll learn about yourself
In this job you will find out about all those situations that you assumed you could never do. Travelling on your own, making all your own arrangements, handling stressful situations with your client, and maybe being with them as they pass away are all things that you may have doubted you could do. Live-in care brings out all the positive aspects in a person.
You’ll see plenty of places
If your live-in care career lasts for years you may end up seeing more of the country than many people who live there! If you enjoy seeing interesting things, the UK is full of things to see and places to visit. Every placement you are sent to will bring a new adventure and something to see and do.
You’ll seldom be bored
Live-in care means different things every day, no two days are ever the exact same. Things change and you will find yourself adapting to them. Some days will be busy, while others may be slower, but they will always be interesting.
The downside?
Possibly the main downside to live-in care is being away from your friends and family. It can be a lonely job, let’s not forget that. But in the midst of loneliness you can find peace and the knowledge that you are the entire world for that one person – your client – for as long as you stay with them.
To sum up
While live-in care may not be the first vocation you look at, it is a varied career which can continue as long as you are in a relatively good state of health. It is also one of the jobs that you can start at any time of your working life.
Many live-in carers continue working for many years because they find it such a rewarding job. Hard work – yes. Boring – definitely not!
