Right now, with the coronavirus and all that it brings with it, many live-in carers may be confused about what you can do and what is still not allowed.
One thing that is certain is that to go outside we need to wear a mask. Going shopping requires a mask, so does visiting the bank, church, post office, libraries, museums, and public reading places.
There are places where wearing a mask is not compulsory. These include areas where it is impractical to do so. Masks are not mandatory in restaurants and pubs where you eat.
So, what to do when your client adamantly refuses to wear a mask?
This poses a huge problem to any carer because it will inevitably lead to a discussion, possibly heated. Unfortunately, there are really only two solutions here – comply or stay at home.
Discuss
If your client has the mental capacity to discuss things, then you may want to start here and talk about why a mask is worn and who needs to wear it.
If the family are available, they may be able to persuade mom to wear her mask when you go out. Often family seem to have more ‘clout’ than carers.
The District Nurse is always a good person to have on your side. For some reason clients seem to respect people who are in a uniform and may listen to them rather than you or family.
Stay home
If your client refuses to comply and you feel that this is putting you both at risk, then you may consider keeping your client at home.
For clients that have the mental capacity to grasp this, you may find yourself headed for a confrontation and this will require patience.
Again, if possible, have the family on your side to back you up about wearing a mask or staying in the house.
Who does not need to wear a mask?
There are some people who do not have to wear a mask, namely:
You can remove the mask to:
If you and your client need to travel anywhere using public transport you must wear a mask.
Failure to do so may mean that you are not allowed to use the bus or train. Even taxis have the right to refuse you if you or your client does not have a mask.
Final thoughts
While wearing a mask may be uncomfortable and unpleasant, these are the rules at the moment. If your client refuses to comply and you are apprehended, you may be fined because your client is not wearing a mask.
Sometimes, it may simply be better for you and your client to remain in the house, rather than venture out with no mask, incur a heavy fine and end up angry at yourself and your client.
It seems that wearing masks is going to be a part of daily life for the foreseeable future. If your client adamantly refuses to wear one, staying at home may be the only option open to you.
