I’m so sick of cooking – what can I do?

If you have been staying with your client through the entire lockdown period, as many carers have chosen to do, then by now you are either bored out of your mind or frazzled with work which seems to come from nowhere when you stay in the house all the time.

It may seem almost as if your workload has doubled while your time off has halved. As for cooking, right now you may be thinking that you never want to make or even eat another shepherds’ pie or macaroni cheese!

Believe me, you are not alone in this situation. The drag of cooking interesting and nutritious meals every day will take its toll on your creativity as well as your patience. Simply getting a decent meal in front of your client and yourself, may be driving you nuts!

So, what can we do?

Now that family can visit again you could start to use this to your advantage. Family members will be eager to see their loved one after so long and will likely ask to stay for lunch.

While you are still worried about keeping yourself and your client safe, you may also realize that the family have hopefully also been staying safe and keeping social distancing in force.

Bearing this in mind, you should take the opportunity to welcome them with a discreet suggestion that they bring lunch with them.

Many family members may feel that they are imposing by doing this but if you set their minds at rest and suggest it yourself, they may be only too pleased to help.

Another way to take a break from cooking is to agree with your client that once a week you order a delivery of some sort.

Many clients are fond of things like pizza and while a nutritionist may not agree about the health properties, if a delivery of pizza or Chinese/curry works for you and your client, then take advantage of the chance. You can always serve extra healthy shepherds’ pie another day!

You have probably asked your client what they want for dinner on most nights but instead of asking about full meals, perhaps you can suggest a type of picnic supper.

Most items can be added to a weekly shop and saved for one night of the week when you don’t cook but still enjoy tasty food.

Things like sausage rolls and salads are perfect now that the weather is warming up. This will simply give you a break from the heat of the stove.

In conclusion

Although we all know how important it is that we feed our clients healthy food, having a change once a week will do very little harm to most of them.

What it will do is to add a little variety to your day, give you some time out of the kitchen and help you to enjoy eating again.
