How to use that glut of apples

As the colder weather approaches, the summer fruits come to an end and the winter selections start. These, unless they are grown in greenhouses, tend to be apples, apples, and more apples!

The good thing with apples is that they are great snacks, easy to carry around with you and easy to eat.

Unfortunately, many people have apple trees in their gardens and find that they have more apples than they know what to do with. Hence the reason why you and your client may receive a bag or two of them.

Can we store them?

Yes, apples keep for a good amount of time in the fridge. You must make sure that you store them away from the vegetables. Apples which are kept in the fridge will last far longer than if kept in a fruit bowl on the counter, even if the room is cool.

Freeze them

You can successfully freeze apples and use them later. You should peel, slice, and blanche them first.

To blanch the apples, you should peel and slice them and then immerse them in boiling water for a minute. Lay them out of a baking sheet to cool and then freeze them. Once frozen you can pack the slices into a container and seal for the future.

Wrap in newspaper

If your client has grown up in a rural area, then they may remember parents storing apples this way. The apples must be individually wrapped and stored somewhere cold. You need to check frequently that they are not attracting rodents.

Recipes using apples

You will find the internet full of recipes to do with apples of all types. It is worth remembering that some apples take longer to soften than others. Cooking apples, while tart, will cook to a pulp quickly, while others may take longer.

Apple crumbles with custard, cream or ice cream will entice your client to eat a little more fruit, and if you make homemade soup, you can also sweeten it a little with finely diced apple.

Final thoughts

There is no need to let those apples go to waste. With a little research and time, you can store them for a later date as they freeze very well and defrost beautifully.
