How to understand the correct wattage of the light bulbs

‘Over lamping’ or using a bulb which is too high for an outlet can easily cause a fire. Before you plug in a new lamp you should be sure to read the wattage required. You should find this on every new lamp that you buy.

Unfortunately, your client may have items in their home which are old and have no labels on them. If you are in any doubt about the wattage of a lamp then it is best to always stay under 60 watts, just to be on the safe side.

Better still – change to LED

Light bulbs will sooner or later burn out and stop working. These days, light bulbs are becoming less freely available, and you may not be able to find some. Changing to an LED light will save you time and money.

LEDs are better than old light bulbs because they produce the same amount of light as older bulbs and they do not burn out as fast.

Final thoughts

For both light bulbs and LED bulbs, there are two things to consider, namely the power (input) and the light intensity (output). Power is expressed in watts and intensity in lumens.

Years ago, most people only cared about the power input because bulbs were standardized in terms of power and lumens. So, a 40-watt bulb would always give less light than a 60-watt bulb.

The most common types in homes are 25, 40, 60, 75 and 100 watts, with 25 watts giving off the smallest amount of light and 100 watts being the most powerful.
