How to treat a spider bite
Fortunately most spider bites are non venomous, although the false widow spider, which is found in southern UK, can harm a person if not treated.
A spider bite will leave two marks on the skin, which may be itchy and red. Most spider bites will heal within a week by themselves.
How to tell if its a spider bite
Look for:
- Two red marks
- Swelling
- Skin damage
- Itching
- Rash around the area
Symptoms that may accompany a spider bite:
- Pain around the area
- Cramping or muscle pain
- Blisters which may be red or purple
- Sweating
- Difficulty breathing
- Chills and fever
- Swollen lymph glands
- High blood pressure
Treating spider bites at home
- Place an icepack on the bite off and on for ten minutes at a time. You should wrap the ice in a towel before using it
- Elevate the area as this will reduce swelling
- Take an antihistamines as this will help reduce itching
- Clean the area with soap and water to reduce infection
- Use an antibiotic cream if the area blisters
When to see the doctor
If symptoms do not go away gradually or seem to worsen, you should see your doctor.
Final thoughts
Just the thought of spider bites is enough to give one goosebumps and having one bite us is a ghastly thought. Fortunately most spiders do not bite humans as their mouths are too small to do this, but it is good to know that if you are bitten there are ways to treat a bite at home.
