If you are a live-in carer and have the use of a car, one of the things you will be most familiar with is putting petrol or diesel in it so that you can get around. Equally important is checking the tyres as this can become a safety issue if left unchecked.
Heavy rain, potholes, cracks in the road, and general use all take their toll on tyres. Eventually there will be less grip on the road leaving you and your client at risk of an accident.
1. Depth of the tread
Just like it is dangerous to walk or run in trainers that have little or not grip, a tyre with no decent tread becomes dangerous to drive.
2. Lots of vibration
This is not normal for the car. A certain amount of vibration is acceptable but if you notice that there is a constant vibration, the tyres may need to be checked.
3. The sidewall is cracked
Any cracks in the sides of the tyres show that the rubber is breaking down. This can cause a blowout at any time.
4. Strange noises
Cars are noisy most of the time and if you drive often enough you will recognise the sounds. However, if you start hearing different sounds you may want to get the tyres checked.
5. Lifespan of the tyres
Tyres will last approximately five years depending on how much the car is used. Anything longer than that should be checked.
When checking the tyres remember to check the spare tyre as well, as this is often forgotten because it is out of sight.
