Chicken is often thought to be one of the staple meats in a household and while when fresh it is nutritious and a good source of protein, there is often a high risk of contamination with it.
So, how long does chicken last in the fridge?
Raw chicken can be kept in the fridge for 1-2 days only before it starts to deteriorate. This also applies to raw turkey.
Cooked chicken can last in the fridge for 3-4 days. This will slow the growth of bacteria, but the chicken will still go bad.
How to tell if chicken is bad?
Check the colour
Chicken that is turning will change colour so if you see any part turning a Gray/green colour, you should throw it away. This indicates the presence of mould.
Smell it
There is a distinct smell of ammonia to chicken which is going off. However, if the chicken has been marinating you may not notice the smell.
Touch it
Bad chicken will have a slimy texture to it, and you should throw it out. Also, do not wash the chicken as any contamination will be spread to surfaces and utensils and cause cross-contamination.
Final thoughts
Chicken spoils very easily and if you are in any doubt about the quality of the poultry then it is best to discard it and use something else.
