It is a very frightening thought that the chemist has given you the wrong medication, and while this is unlikely, it can and does happen. Taking the wrong medication can mean anything from bad symptoms to a life threatening issue so check your medication every time you pick up a new batch.
Sometimes our needs change and what worked a year ago simply does not work any more. There are some signs that either your medication is not working any more or you have been prescribed the wrong medication.
Rapid heartbeat
You should be invited on a regular basis to discuss your medication. This is your chance to tell the doctor whether you are still happy with your prescription or not. It is also your chance to talk about any side effects which you are unhappy with.
If you feel that the medication is not working as well or even not at all, you should talk to your doctor. There may be an alternative that can be prescribed. If not, the doctor will be able to advise on how to handle side effects.
Never be embarrassed to ask for a second opinion, particularly if you are worried or unsure about what has been prescribed. Your doctor should be happy to refer you to another healthcare professional, and you have the right to ask for this.
They will be able to talk to you about side effects of any medication. They often have a private consulting room where they will be happy to help you. This is especially good if you do not feel comfortable asking at the counter.
If you have very recently started a new drug, remember that it may take some time to start to work. Your doctor should explain this to you, or you should ask at the chemist. Not every drug starts to work right away, some need a few days while others need several weeks before you will see a change.
Remember that you always have the right to question whether medication is right for you and whether the side effects are what you can handle. You are entitled to ask for a second opinion and should do so if you are at all concerned that the medication is not right for you.
