Many live-in carers have cars they have purchased in the UK to make travel easier between clients. While this is normally a good idea, issues arise when the carer needs to return home and the car stored.
Incorrectly storing the car can lead to all sorts of problems on return, not least being unable to start it and get to a client on time. In short, the longer a car is stored, the greater chance of developing issues.
Clean it
Before you leave, make sure to clean the car. Wash the exterior to remove dirt, debris, grease and asphalt as these can stain the paintwork and become permanently embedded. Also be sure to clean the interior and remove any rubbish.
Invest in a cover
A cover will keep the paintwork away from the elements. Dust, rain, sunlight are all harmful and can damage the paintwork. A cover will also help prevent scratches.
Top up the fluids
Top off the oil and anti-freeze, as well as the petrol. Use a premium fuel for this as it offers long term protection for the engine.
Wiper blades
Protect these from sticking to the glass by placing a sheet of plastic under each blade.
Keep the handbrake off
If the handbrake is left on for a long time it can make the brake pads fuse to the rotors. Rather use a chock under the wheels to stop the car from moving.
Disconnect the battery
If possible remove the battery completely. If this is not possible use a trickle charger to keep it topped up.
If at all possible, find a storage unit where you can leave your car safely for an extended time.
Often a storage unit is climate controlled and will certainly prevent your car from being stolen if left on the road.
