How to stop the microwave from smelling

Unfortunately, some foods tend to leave a smell in the microwave. Reheated pizza, popcorn and even cooking vegetables can leave the inside smelling less than fresh. There are some ways to get rid of the smells and keep the microwave smelling fresh all the time.

Vinegar

In a microwave bowl, place a tablespoon of white vinegar and ½ cup of water.

Microwave on high for two minutes. Keep the door shut for 15 minutes.

Leaving the door shut will do two things, namely, loosen any stuck foods, and absorb any odours.

After 15 minutes take the bowl out and wipe the interior with a damp cloth or paper towel.

Vinegar and baking soda

Here’s another excellent way to remove smells from the microwave.

Soak a clean sponge in white vinegar and then sprinkle it with baking soda.

Pop the sponge into the microwave for 30 seconds.

Now use the sponge to wipe the interior of the microwave.

Use citrus

Make a mixture by slicing a lemon in half and place the fruit and peels in a bowl of 2 cups water.

Pop into the microwave and heat for 4 minutes.

If possible, leave the bowl and fruit in the microwave for 12 hours or overnight.

Remove and wipe down with a damp paper towel.

Use baking soda

We all know that leaving a box of baking soda in the fridge removes smells, but this also works for the microwave.

You simply need to place an open box of baking soda in the microwave, close the door and leave it overnight.

Remember that bad food smells are also due to spilled foods that are not wiped up. It is best to wipe the inside of the microwave down after every use. If you do this, any spilled foods will not harden or solidify inside, making cleaning difficult.

If smells persist after you have cleaned the microwave you may want to have the microwave looked at by a technician to ensure that there is not a problem with the workings.
