How to stop shoes from smelling

During the summer months it is very common for shoes to start smelling. Every live-in carer at some point will have smelled this and wondered if the smell would ever go away.

What causes the smell?

Smelly shoes are caused by fungus and bacteria that grows inside shoes. Shoes which are poorly ventilated or made from synthetic material are more likely to smell. Additionally, socks which are not good at wicking moisture will cause shoes to smell.

Can we prevent smelly shoes?

  • Hygiene is important so make sure that feet are washed daily using soap and water. Additionally, wear clean socks every day and should socks become damp during the day, change them for a clean pair.
  • Choose natural materials as these allow better ventilation. Socks made of polyester, nylon and wool will wick away moisture better and keep the skin dry.
  • Rotate shoes. Often a live-in carer will find that a client wears the same shoes every day. This will often cause shoes to be smelly. If possible, try to rotate shoes. This will give them time to dry completely before being worn again.

How to get rid of the smell

Dryer sheets and essential oils will not remove smells, they will only mask it for a while. Neither will freezing the shoes remove the smell. Both methods will be temporary but will not keep smells away.

Baking soda

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda inside each shoe and leave it for several hours. If possible, leave overnight.

Activated charcoal

You can buy sachets of activated charcoal which absorb and remove smells. Place the sachets in the shoes and leave as per the instructions.

Wash them

The best way to remove smells is to wash the shoes. Use a hand detergent and warm water. Gently sponge the inside and outside. Rinse well and allow to dry completely.

Final thoughts

While baking soda and charcoal do absorb smells, if the shoes have fungus and bacteria inside them the smell will come back as soon as the shoes become damp. You may want to avoid spritzing with vinegar as this can damage the shoe fabric.
