How to stop a sink from smelling

There are very few odours worse than a sink which smells. This can be so bad that it makes one literally feel ill. What often makes things worse is that we may have no idea why the sink is smelling so badly, or what we can do to improve things.

The good news is that smelly sinks can often be fixed without calling a plumber, and using ingredients which can be found in most kitchens.

What can cause the sink to smell?

Mold and mildew

Occasionally the sink can develop a small leak which if left unattended will cause any wooden shelves to become damp and start to smell. This should be one of the first things you look for if you notice a bad smell.

Bacteria

If you have ruled out any leaks, then consider bacteria. Scraps of food which can accumulate in the pipe can cause nasty smells if not disposed of. Even new sinks can start to smell if debris is not removed.

Sulfates

If the sink smells like rotten eggs then the cause may be too much sulphate in the water. While this is not toxic, it can mean drainage issues and bad smells.

Clogged sewer vents

You will know that this is the problem when the sink does not drain properly. This is often the case when people have been on holiday and the sink is left unused for a long time.

How do we fix a smelly sink?

Hot water and washing up liquid

Often the fastest and most effective way to stop a smelly sink is to fill the basin with hot water and add washing up liquid to it. You should have at least two inches of water to mix the soap in. When mixed, simply pull the plug and let the hot water drain away.

Lemon peel, ice and salt

This is handy to know if you have a smell coming from a waste disposal unit. Turn the disposal unit off, drop a few ice cubes down and a handful of coarse salt. Now turn the unit on, let the ice be processed and then add some lemon peels.

Vinegar and baking soda

Pour a cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar down the sink. Leave this for at least ten minutes. Boil some water in the kettle. Flush this down the drain. Finish by flushing with cold water again.

When to call the plumber

If you have tried several times to get rid of the smell yourself and none of the home remedies have worked, it may be time to call in a professional. They will be able to check the sulphate levels in the water and remove any severe clogs.

Final thought

If you are in any doubt about the sink and smell, it is a good idea to call a plumber. They have the correct tools to check for deep blockages and get the kitchen smelling fresh again.
