How to safely dispose of an old phone

If you were to do a survey of mobile phone users, you would find that over half of them never trade an old phone. This is mostly due to concerns that their data may be discovered and used against them.

Additionally, throwing them away and having them go to landfill is damaging to the environment as they take thousands of years to break down. According to forgerecycling.co.uk up to 80% of any mobile phone is recyclable.

There are some things you can do to recycle your old phone, namely:

  • Donate it
  • Sell it
  • Recycle it
  • Take it to an electronics shop

An important note is that before you do anything with it, you need to make sure that you have wiped all your personal data from it. This includes removing any SIM cards, deleting all bank information and bank account details, and then restoring the phone to factory settings.

Donating it

There are several charities in the UK where you can drop off any old phones. You will be able to check online and find charities, churches and similar organisations where your old phone will be accepted. Here they will be recycled and sent to people across the world who may not have access to phones.

Sell for cash

Gumtree and eBay are two online platforms where you can sell any old phones. There are also companies like Envirophone and Fonebank where you can sell your phone.

Recycle it

You should be able to find out online the closest recycle site. Phones are not included in general household recycling so cannot simply be placed in a bin with general rubbish. These need to be disposed of correctly. The local council in your area will be able to give you information on safe places to do this.

Take it to an electronics shop

Many stores will take an old phone in return for a trade-in programme. Typically, they will ask you to sign a new contract, and receive a new and better phone in exchange for your old phone.

Final thoughts

Whichever way you choose to dispose of your old phone, the most important thing is to have all your data removed from it. Take your time over this and make sure that you have done a complete factory reset before parting with your old mobile.
