How to repair scratches on wooden furniture

Any which way we look at it, it is a fact of life that accidents do happen. Real wood furniture, while looking lovely, can easily be scratched and made to look shabby. Once a glossy finish is scratched, the piece is marred.

Fortunately, there are ways that we can either remove scratches or certainly make them less visible.

What you will need:

Sanding blocks or pieces of sandpaper. You will notice that sandpaper has a grit number. The higher this number, the smoother finish you will get on the wood.

  • Wood filler if the scratches are deep. Any DIY store will sell this.
  • A putty knife
  • Wood stain
  • Furniture polish
  • Soft cloth

Light scratches may be able to be repaired or concealed by using a touch up pen of the same shade as the wood.

For deeper scratches

  • Clean the area with a damp cloth so that any debris is removed
  • Assess the damage and assemble your products
  • Apply a small amount of wood filler to the scratches and level this with your putty knife
  • Leave to dry then smooth the surface using the sanding block or the sandpaper
  • When completely flat you can use the wood stain and apply this with a soft cloth
  • When you are happy with the repair you should then polish the area, again using a soft cloth.

Final thoughts

If the scratches are shallow and you do not have access to stores, you may be able to conceal them by using crayons.

Choose a colour that matches the scratch and gently fill in the mark with the wax, then buff it up with furniture polish.
