How to renew your DBS

Before you start working as a Live-in carer, you will be asked by your agency to supply a criminal background check. Even a private live-in carer may be asked to provide this form before starting work.

Prospective employers and other organisations will want to see your DBS certificate. For them to do this they need to:

  • Be legally entitled to carry out a check
  • Have your permission

In order to have an up-to-date DBS certificate which a prospective employer can view you should make use of the online portal – DBS Update Service.

When would you use this feature?

You may need to use it is you apply for placements with more than one agency, or with more than one private family.

What does the Update Service allow?

  • You can keep your certificate up-to-date
  • More than one employer can view it

Note that this service is only applicable to standard and enhanced DBS checks.

How do you register for this service?

Once you have received you first certificate, you will need to register for the Update Service. This will cost you £13 per year. You can pay this either by debit or credit card.

You will need to use the application reference number on your original certificate, and you will find this on your application form.

To make use of the Update Service, you must complete the form within 30 days of your certificate being issued. It is a good idea to do it right away, so you don’t forget about it.

What will you be able to see?

Once you have registered for the Update Service you can:

  • Add and remove a certificate
  • View your details
  • See who has been checking on your certificate
  • Give employers permission to check any changes on your certificate

About renewing your subscription

After you have first registered for a DBS certificate, you will be given the option for an automatic renewal.

You can also use this option up to 30 days before the current subscription ends. You cannot do this on the last day of your subscription.

The Disclosure and Barring Services website has all the information you will need, and you can email them or call them.
