How to renew a prescription at a different GP

While many live-in carers have addresses in the UK, and doctors close to home, occasionally you may need to refill your own prescription at your client’s house because this may be too far from your own home to drive back and forth.

Can this be done?

Yes, it can. When you are issued with a prescription you will be given a paper copy. This is what you should take to another chemist or dispenser if you need to refill elsewhere.

If you look at the paper copy you will find a barcode which is unique when scanned and can be used to download your prescription from the NHS database. In fact, these days most prescriptions are signed, sent, and processed electronically.

There are two ways to refill a prescription, namely:

Choosing a chemist or dispensary for all to be filled. This choice means that when you ask for a refill your medication is automatically sent to the pharmacy of your choice.

Secondly, you can decide each time where you want your prescription to be sent and dispensed from. You still need to order the repeat prescription, but it can be sent to a more convenient dispenser.

Final thought

If you are at all unhappy with the dispenser, you can change it at any time. Speak to the pharmacist at your new choice and they will help you to do this.
