How to remove stains in the toilet

Sometimes it feels that no matter how much bathroom cleaning we do, the toilet is still stained and appears grimy. No matter how much scrubbing goes into it, the stains either stay or reappear soon again.

What causes toilets to stain?

There are several reasons for the bowl to stain and as soon as you know which one is taking place in your bathroom, the quicker it can be fixed.

Minerals

These stains are caused by high levels of calcium, limescale and natural minerals that are found in the water supply. You may hear of water called hard, this is due to the minerals in the supply. Typically these stains build up and create yellow and brown stains. These are very hard to remove.

Rust

These are dark brown or red and are often an indication of high levels of iron in the water source. These will stand out quickly against a white toilet bowl so it is likely you will notice them and try to clean them early.

Copper

Even without copper piping it is still possible to find copper stains in the toilet bowl. It is an indication that the water source is highly acidic and rich in copper. These stains will come off but quickly return.

Mold

These are indicated by a mold smell rather than a colour change in the bowl. You may see dark green and black spots around the bowl and this is a sure sign that mold is the problem.

Clean the bowl naturally

It is of course possible to clean the bowl with chemicals but for those who prefer to do things without chemicals, there are also methods.

Lemon juice

This helps to break down stains. Additionally it will give the bathroom a clean, fresh smell.

  • Flush the toilet and cut off the water supply so you have an empty bowl
  • Mix one cup of lemon juice with half a cup or water in a spray bottle
  • Spray the entire toilet including under the seat lip
  • Leave for 20 minutes
  • Use the toilet scrubber to clean the stains away
  • Turn the water on and flush the toilet

White vinegar and baking soda

  • Flush and turn off the water supply
  • Sprinkle the mixture liberally into the bowl
  • Leave to sit for 10 minutes
  • Pour 2 cups of distilled white vinegar into the bowl
  • Shut the lid and leave for 30 minutes
  • Give the inside a good scrubber
  • Turn on the water and flush

Final thoughts

Before you start you should either turn on a fan or open a window. Additionally, you should wear eyewear and gloves to protect from bacteria and mold spores. A mask is useful if working with vinegar.
