How to remove ink stains

If you have ever cared for a client who enjoys doing puzzles, then the chances are that you have come across ink stains somewhere, either on clothing or on furniture.

Dried ink stains can be difficult to remove and the sooner you can deal with an ink mark, the better chance you will have to remove it.

So, how do we remove ink stains?

Act immediately

As soon as you notice a stain, place a cloth or paper towel underneath it so that it does not seep through to other fabric. This will also soak up as much as possible.

Dab, don’t rub

Rubbing will simply force the ink deeper into the fabric and make it harder to remove. Dab with a clean cloth to remove as much as possible.

Now try one of these:

Hairspray

If you use an alcohol-based hairspray you will manage to remove the ink. Place the garment on a clean cloth and spray the stain. It is a good idea to try the hair spray first on an inconspicuous area to be sure that it leaves no marks. Once you have done this, then add the garment to the washing as you would normally do.

Washing up liquid and glycerin

Blend a small amount of washing-up liquid with glycerin and use a soft cloth to soak this up and dab on the stain. Dab until the ink is removed and then repeat on the other side of the fabric.

Baking soda

Make a solution of baking soda and water and use a cotton ball to dab onto the stain. Leave it to dissolve the ink and when it is dry brush the solution away. After this you can wash the garment as your normally would.

Final thought

While older stains which have dried and seeped into fabric may require specialist treatment such as from a dry cleaner, small fresh ink stains can be removed if they are treated as soon as possible.
