How to register with a dentist

Much as most of us hate going to the dentist, it is something that we may have to do, and as live-in carers who move around this can be very difficult.

There are two ways that you can see the dentist, namely by going private or by finding a dentist from the NHS.

If you are able to use your client’s address or even that of your agency, you will be able to join an NHS dentist group. If you cannot supply a UK address, then your option is go and see a private dentist.

Bear in mind that even if you do manage to find an NHS dentist, some things are not covered. These are cosmetic dentistry and orthodontics, which you will need to pay for yourself privately.

Using the NHS service

You will need to register with an NHS dentist. Because there may not be a service in the area where you are located, you do not have to stay in the catchment area to find a dentist. Many dentists have a limited capacity for patients so you may need to place your name on a waiting list.

Once you have been accepted at a dental group you will need to register and be added to their database. This is a simple form which you will complete and hand to the receptionist.

What treatment is available?

All clinically necessary treatment is covered by the NHS. Included in this are procedures that you need to keep your teeth healthy such as cleaning. Cosmetic whitening is not covered as it is not essential to the good health of your teeth.

Dental hygienists work within the dental groups to provide scaling, and polishing services. They can also give gum treatments and answer any questions you may have.

After you have seen the dentist for the first time, you will normally be given a dental plan and should you agree with their treatment, they will talk to you about any excess costs that you will be asked to pay.

What if you choose to go private?

Bear in mind that private dentists can set their own costs and you will find that this varies from region to region, so be sure to make enquiries about this.

How do you find an NHS dentist?

Remember that you do not have to choose the dentist closest to you so think about where you spend your days off and perhaps register there.

Here is a link to finding NHS dentists in the UK. Simply enter the postcode you prefer and choose from there.
