How to provide a liquid diet

Liquid diets are required before some tests, procedures, or surgeries that can only be carried out on an empty stomach and intestine. Colonoscopy is one of these procedures.

Liquid and clear diets are also used for certain digestive problems like vomiting and diarrhea.

A full liquid diet is made up only of fluids and foods that are normally liquid. This includes foods that turn to liquid when they are left at room temperature, such as ice cream.

If you (or your client) are on a full liquid diet, then you should not eat any solid foods until your doctor tells you so.

Full liquid diet foods:

  • Water
  • Tea, coffee with milk and honey
  • Juices, nectars
  • Jellies
  • Sieved creamy soups, consommé, bouillons
  • Milkshakes
  • Puddings such as mouses and custards
  • Ice lollies
  • Supplement milkshakes such as Ensure

While a full liquid diet can mean that you get enough protein and fat, it will not add much fiber to your diet, and you may not get enough minerals and vitamins. Your doctor may advise you to add a supplement until your diet returns to normal.
