Learning how to paint your own fingernails or those of your client is a skill worth learning as not only will it save you money but you can do it whenever you like with no appointments needed.
Clean them first
Preparing nails before you paint them will save time in the long run. Make sure you have a good nail polish remover and some cotton balls. Get rid of as much old polish and dirt as you can because any residue will leave lumps and blemishes in the new polish.
Buff away
Don't be tempted to skip this step. Nails that are not buffed will have a build up of natural oils, and residue of previous manicures will remain on the nails. Buffing gets the nails shiny clean and helps to get rid of any ridges.
It's all about the base
A base will help to hydrate the nails as well as protect chipping. You should wait at least two minutes between coats so that it is completely dry.
Add your colour
After the base coat is dry add the colour of your choice. Work slowly and smoothly from the cuticle to the nail edge, getting as close to the sides as you can without spilling over onto your skin.
Add effects
This is the time to add any special effects that you like. Make sure that the nails are completely dry before the next step.
Add a top coat
This will seal the colour and any special effects you have chosen. The top coat should take around four minutes to dry so don’t be tempted to rush this stage as the overall effect may be ruined.
When it comes to painting nails remember that less is definitely more in this case. Try not to overload the brush and make too many strokes.
The ideal amount is just enough to cover the nail in one coat. You should with one brush full, be able to stripe the nail once down the middle and once on either side.
