How to open a bank account in the UK

If you are working in the UK, or thinking about coming to the country to work, then you will need a bank account. This used to be a difficult process. However, recently this has become slightly easier to do.

What documents do you need?

There are two documents that you need to open your bank account:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of address

For proof of identity, you can supply your passport, driving license or EU identity card (for EU nationals.

For proof of address, you need to supply any of the documents below:

  • A recent mortgage statement
  • A rental agreement
  • A recent utility bill (less than 3 months old)
  • A recent credit card statement (less than 3 months old and not printed from the internet
  • A recent council tax bill

Can you open a bank account without proof of address?

Yes, this is possible. Recently, banks in the UK have changed rules and are more flexible.

Many banks will accept a letter from your agency stating that you are employed by them. Some agencies will have a postal system which you can use as your base address in the UK.

It is also possible that you can open a bank account from your own country via your local bank, as long as they have a corresponding bank in the UK.

Several major UK banks have ‘international accounts’ which are designed for non-residents, which are great if you cannot get an address in the UK sorted out.

Banks that have international accounts are:

  • Barclays
  • HSBC
  • Natwest
  • Lloyds

Another possibility for your banking is to open an online bank. Wise is a multi-currency account which enables you to both send and receive your money with low charges and high-speed transactions.

Final thoughts

Don’t be put off from coming to the UK to work simply because you are unsure about banking there. Talk to your own bank and see if they can suggest something, look at online banks, which as becoming very popular, talk to your agency as they may be able to help you.

You can even discuss with the family and see if they give you permission to use your client’s address to open a bank account. There are always ways around things, and this is something that is easily sorted out.
