How to make the house smell festive

Sometimes, particularly in the cold months when we tend to keep windows closed, the house can start to smell a little musty. If there are pets in your client’s home, then you may also notice that the house develops a ‘doggy smell.’

Around Christmas it is great to have the house smell like the season – cinnamon, ginger and pine are all smells which are easy to make and not expensive either.

Not everyone likes the smell of candles and often it is not a good idea to have candles with some clients. Making the house smell Christmassy is quick and easy to do, not to mention inexpensive.

Cinnamon-scented pine cones

Next time you go for a walk take a bag with you and pick up some pine cones. You may also be able to buy these at a local market.

Now bake the pinecones on a foil-lined tray at 100 degrees C for 20 minutes. This will remove the sap and open them up.

Make a spray of cinnamon essential oil and water and give the pinecones a good spray. You can also spray the cones with watered-down white glue and then sprinkle ground cinnamon on them.

Leave to dry for 24 hours and you will be able to place them on windowsills or as table center pieces.

Make a garland

You will be able to pick up from discount shops such as Poundland twine, dried orange slices, cinnamon sticks, and bay leaves.

Use the twine to tie around the items and string them all together. You will find that they stay smelling fresh for several weeks.

Make a pumpkin spice room spray

Simmer fresh pumpkin puree with cinnamon sticks, cloves, and vanilla extract in a pot. Once you have simmered for five minutes, let the mixture cool down and strain it through a sieve. Place the liquid in a spray bottle and in a ratio of one-third mixture and two-thirds water.

Use this instead of regular air freshener or in toilets and bathrooms.

Final thoughts

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to keep your client’s house smelling festive and most ingredients are found in the kitchen anyway. What you cannot find will not be expensive to buy and the house will stay smelling festive for several weeks.
