How to make the best coffee

Who doesn’t love the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning? And who knows the way to make the best brewed coffee? Often in our busy day live-in carers may resort to instant coffee, which - if you like it - is just fine.

There are, however, other ways to get a decent cup of coffee, and not spend a lot of time doing it, either.

How much coffee to water should I use?

As a rule of thumb, you should use 60 grams of coffee to 1 liter of water. This is a good starting point although you may want to adjust this for stronger or weaker.

Additionally, be aware that the best temperature for brewing our coffee is just under boiling point, namely between 88 degrees and 92 degrees.

Although there are several different ways to make a decent cup of coffee, chances are the only utensil other than a kettle you may find in your client’s home may be a cafetiere.

The advantage of a cafeteria is that there are no filters to buy, and they are fast. You can have your good cup of coffee – once the kettle has boiled – in around three minutes.

Here’s how to do it

  • Boil the kettle and then leave to cool slightly
  • Add 18g coffee of your choice to the cafeteria
  • Pour in 300 ml of slightly cooled boiled water
  • Give the coffee a stir and place the lid on it
  • Wait for 3 and ½ minutes for your coffee to brew
  • After this time gently push the filter down until it reaches the coffee grounds
  • Pour and enjoy

Final thoughts

If your client's house uses a septic tank system, then never dispose of the coffee grounds down the sink or toilet as this is bad for septic systems.

If there is no septic tank system in place, then grounds may be flushed down the toilet or washed down the sink. You can also save them and use them around garden plants.
