Memory books are great and in fact have been around for many years. You may even remember seeing a similar type of book made by your mother or grandmother.
A memory book is simply a collection of items such as postcards, pictures, mementos, and such like which bring back memories of the past.
These days many people keep their pictures on their cell phones or laptops but sometimes it can be beneficial to make a memory book for a client.
How do we start a memory book?
Gather things
Before you start collecting your client’s items you should confirm that the family are happy for you to do so. Once they have agreed, then you may want to ask them to contribute any relevant pictures they have so you can use them.
While you may find heaps of photographs, be ready to use other things which would bring happy memories for your client. Old postcards and greeting cards often hold a special place in their hearts, particularly if a loved one has passed away.
Select a book
You will find many designs online and even in some hobby shops. Choose a book which will be easy for your client to open and close. A book which is too small will soon drop onto the floor, and a large book may get too heavy once it is filled.
Several books are made with adhesive pages so there is no need to use glue. These make your job a lot quicker and easier. They are also mostly made with hardcovers so can withstand regular usage.
Be creative but simple
When laying out photographs you should remember that many older people have issues with their eyesight. You may be better keeping the backgrounds clean and uncluttered so that your client can focus completely on the item on the page.
If you know the dates of pictures, then write them clearly so your client can read them easily.
Add stories
If family have memories of certain events, then write them down so your client can read them. They may remember things from a different perspective.
Keep it handy
As is often the case, things get placed on top of books and magazines so keep the memory book where your client can reach it and look at as often as they like.
Final thoughts
Memory books do not have to be complicated. In fact, keeping the layout simple is a good idea. You should aim to make the memory book easy to read so your client can look at it often.
