How to make a good soup for colds and chills

Even in summer it is possible to catch a cold, and you or your client may feel decidedly under the weather with one of these. You may have heard that chicken soup is good for colds and chills, and there is a certain amount of truth in these facts.

Chicken soup helps because drinking it means that you are breathing in steam which helps to loosen up congestion. It also helps to keep you hydrated. In fact, chicken soup is good for both cold and flu symptoms.

If we look at the key ingredients of chicken soup, we see that included in the recipe are onions, garlic and other ingredients which are all providing a good dose of phytonutrients. These are vital for a well-functioning immune system. They help to reduce inflammation; the calories are easily digested, and they help to ward of infections.

So next time you feel the start of a cold or chill, cook up a pot of this soup. You can also freeze it in portions until the winter months.

 

Soup for colds and chills

 

Ingredients

 

2-5 fresh chillies, chopped 

4 cloves of garlic, chopped 

1 red onion, chopped

5cm fresh ginger, peeled and grated 

2 tablespoons olive oil  

2 sweet potatoes scrubbed and cut small cubes, leave skins on 

1 cup sliced mushrooms 

Water/veg stock to cover 

 

Method

 

 1. Fry onion, garlic, chilli & ginger until the onion is soft 

 2. Add other ingredients and cover with stock/water

 3. Cook for 15 mins until potato is soft 

 4. Add salt and pepper to taste 

 5. Blend when cool 

 6. You can freeze individual portions and use at first signs of cough/ cold/flu/congestion
