How to keep towels fluffy and white

We all love soft fluffy towels. I am sure we have pleasant memories of staying in hotels where the white towels are fluffy and soft.

How on earth can we keep ours that way?

After time all towels will lose that fluffy feel and start to turn hard. This is due to the soap residue which builds up in the fibers every time we wash them.

How do we change this?

Surprisingly, towels, even though we think of them as hard wearing, do need gentle care if they are to stay soft. Often, they are overloaded with harsh detergents. This will strip the towels of their softness.

Even more surprisingly, using the tumble dryer at high temperatures ca also make towels turn hard.

Hard towels are also a sign that the water in the area is hard, and here many people opt for fabric softeners to keep the laundry soft. Sometimes the softener will add to the issue and leave towels hard, instead of soft.

Using white vinegar in the washing is one way to restore towels to fluffy and softness. Adding a cup of white vinegar to the final rinse in the washing machine will remove any old residues and fluff up the fibers.

You could also use soda crystals in the washer followed by white vinegar instead of fabric softener.

Final thoughts

Using white vinegar either in the final rinse of the washing machine or in place of fabric softener is a cheap and very effective way to get those towels fluffy and soft again.

White vinegar is easily found in most supermarkets, and even online these days and is a small change to make to have soft towels again.
