How to keep those leggings in shape

As the colder weather arrives many people switch from skirts and dresses to jeans and leggings. While jeans will wash well and retain their shape, often leggings seem to become shapeless or out of shape around the knees, making them unattractive to wear.

How do we keep them in shape?

Choose the right size

Leggings should fit snugly but still let you move comfortably. If you seem to be between sizes then it is a good idea to go down a size.

Wash as instructed

Instructions are given because they will help leggings to maintain shape and elasticity, so it is a good idea to stick to them.

Avoid high heat

Excessive heat can damage the elasticity of the leggings so extremely hot washes are best avoided.

Stretch when wet

Once you have washed your leggings you can stretch them gently into the desired shape. Some people even wear them while damp for about ten minutes.

Use weights

If your leggings become misshapen at the knees you can use weights to stretch them out. Use a backpack or a water bottle at each end and gently stretch them until they are straight.

Wear them often

Wearing leggings can help to mould them to your body and stretch them into your own shape.

Final thoughts

With a little bit of planning it is possible to keep leggings in the shape we want, without them becoming baggy around the knees. Keeping the fabric soft is another way that they will hold your shape and not become stiff so you could even use baby shampoo or fabric softener when you wash them.
