How to keep the houseplants healthy

It is great to be at a placement where there are beautiful house plants. Many people will unfortunately not know how to care for them and may see them wither and die before the end of the placement.

If you are in a placement where there are houseplants there are some easy ways to keep them alive and healthy.

Light

Very few houseplants can stand direct sunlight, particularly reflected through glass windows. Well-lit areas are the best place for most house plants. As a general rule flowering plants need 12-16 hours of light per day and foliage plants need 14 – 16 hours of light a day. Placing them in a room where the curtains are shut most of the day will leave you with unhappy plants.

Don’t move them

Plants do not like to be moved around a lot. They will acclimate to an area. Additionally, moving them frequently can introduce changes in temperatures which may be bad for the plant. If the plant looks healthy where it is, then leave it alone.

Watch the humidity

Particularly when the central heating is on, the air gets very dry. Most plants need a certain amount of humidity to do well. You can keep the area humid by spraying with a bottle of distilled water. Another way is to place the plant in a saucer of small pebbles. Add water to the pebbles and it will keep the area around the plant humid.

Add a fertilizer

Most house plants need fertilizer particularly if they have been in the same soil for a long time. A fresh change of soil may be all that is needed. If you do add fertilizer then it should be a 10/10/10 mix which means that the plant gets equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.

Finally..

Never, no matter how much you are tempted, don't throw the dregs of your coffee or tea around the plant. Sugar attracts bugs and also makes the perfect breeding ground for them. Coffee and tea will attract flies and wasps.

While some people add coffee grounds to plant soil, you should not do this to indoor plants because insects which may not normally bother the plant may eat it or start an infestation.
