How to keep the house cool in summer

While summer is always appreciated and looked forward to, it can be extremely hot and almost unbearable when it continues unabated. Sometimes it feels as if we will never be able to cool the house down!

There are some ways to cool things down without having to buy an expensive air conditioner.

Close the curtains and windows

While you may be tempted to leave curtains and windows open, it is best to shut them during the hottest part of the day. This will stop hot air filling the room and keep the blazing sun off the room. Light coloured curtains and blinds work well in summer.

Blocking the heat

Preventing the house from getting hot in the first place is a good idea. This can work with awnings at windows, blinds and large potted plants or trees which shade the windows when the sun shines in.

Adjust the ceiling fan

Fans that rotate clockwise simply push hot air around the room. Set the fan to rotate counter clockwise in the summer and you will feel the difference.

Shut doors

Shut the doors to rooms which are not being used, and make sure to use draught excluders to ensure that the cool air stays in the room.

Open up in the evening

As the evenings cool, you should open up the rooms again as the cool air will help bring the internal temperature down.

Make the fan work better

A bowl of ice placed in front of the fan will give you a cooling mist effect. It is cheap and easy to do and well worth it.

Final thoughts

One other thing that will help to keep you and your client cool is to try to wear cotton clothing. Cotton is breathable and loose clothing will help to cool the body down. Additionally, cotton sheets on the bed will feel better in a heatwave.
