With correct care and cleaning, it is possible to keep non-stick pots and pans clean for years. Unfortunately, often at live-in care placements they are much the worse for wear.
If you are fortunate enough to arrive somewhere with non-stick cookware in good condition, then there are some things you can do to do to keep them that way.
Non-stick pots and pans are coated with either ceramic or Teflon (also known as PTFE). This material helps the surface to stay slick so that food slides off without getting stuck.
You should read the manufacturer’s instructions but basically the care for these pots and pans is much the same.
Check the label
The pot or pan must be labelled as dishwasher safe. If this label is not displayed, then do not add them to the dishwasher with other things. The hot temperatures in the dishwasher will break down to non-stick surface and ruin the pot or pan.
Avoid abrasives
Never use steel wool, scouring pads and even stiff brushes on these items as they will damage the surface. A mild dish soap and a soft washing cloth will be all you should need to clean them.
For stuck on residue
You can mix some baking soda and a little water to a paste. Apply to the residue, rinse and dry. You should then re season the pan with cooking oil.
Use the right utensils
Never use sharp instruments in the pot or pan and only use stirrers and spoons which are designed for non-stick surfaces. Avoid metal utensils and stick to wooden spoons.
Don’t overheat
High temperatures will damage the non-stick surface so do not heat up the pot or pan while it is empty. There should always be a liquid in before you turn the cooker plate on.
Avoid non-stick spray
This may come as a surprise, but it will actually make the food stick and damage the pan. Additionally, this builds up over time and ruins the non-stick surface. Use oil or butter to brown foods.
Final thoughts
If you are lucky enough to be at a placement where the pots and pans are non-stick, it is well worth taking a little care to keep them that way. You will be rewarded by having food which is never burnt and pots which cook evenly and efficiently every time.
