How to keep milk tasting fresh

There is nothing worse than arriving at a placement to find that the milk has a definite smell to it. While it may not curdle when added to tea or coffee, it just does not seem as fresh as you would like.

Here are some tips to keep the milk fresh for longer

Store on shelves

This is because the shelves are cooler than placing the milk in the door of the fridge. This entire area tends to be warmer than the interior.

Don’t pour milk back

If you have set out a milk jug for breakfast and have half left, it is best not to pour it back into the carton. It will spoil quicker than if you leave it in the jug and use it as soon as possible. The milk in the carton will also stay fresher for longer.

Consume within three days

This is the recommended time to use milk after opening the container. If you constantly do not use it in about this tie, then consider buying a smaller container.

Keep in the fridge as long as possible

Only keep the milk out of the fridge for the time you take to pour it and then place it back in the fridge. Don’t leave it hanging about on the counter as it will warm up quickly and spoil sooner.

Keep containers closed

Store your milk as far away from strong smelling foods as possible. Milk will easily take on the taste of other foods and can soon start smelling like onions, garlic and even strong-smelling cheese if placed too close to them.

Final thoughts

Milk is one product that can be frozen and defrosted with perfect results. Make sure that the milk you freeze is fresh, preferably unopened in its original container. Simply thaw in the fridge for about 24 hours and use as planned.
