How to keep lettuce fresh for longer

As many live-in carers know, their clients enjoy eating a salad several times a week, and while most vegetables will stay fresh for the week, lettuce is one of those foods that tends to go off very quickly.

Should we store them washed or unwashed?

Lettuce which comes in a head rather than in leaves is always best left attached to the head and stored unwashed. Only rinse the amount of leaves you need for each meal and wash them.

How to keep lettuce fresh for two weeks

Wrap the entire lettuce head in a paper towel or even a clean tea towel. This will help to absorb any moisture. Now place the lettuce in the crisper drawer of the fridge. If you simply place it on the shelf it will not last as long.

Can we keep loose leaf lettuce fresh?

You can expect loose leaf lettuce to stay fresh for longer if it is wrapped in paper towels or a clean tea towel, as this will absorb moisture.

What about bagged lettuce?

These do not ever last as long as full heads of lettuce but if it is removed from the bag and placed in an airtight container in the fridge, it will last a little longer.

Final thoughts

Lettuce is so popular with many people, and such a shame that often it needs to be thrown out because it has gone bad. With a few simple changes you can get lettuce to last a bit longer and still taste fresh.
