There is nothing worse than washing your face in the morning only to have the facecloth smell musty and damp.
Why does this happen?
Smells on facecloths build up from a combination of body oils and soap and in the damp environment they are normally left in, become a perfect breeding ground for mold and bacteria.
Even worse, when we use a facecloth, if there are any germs on it, they are transferred to our faces and can cause skin infections and even eye infections.
How do we get rid of smells and bacteria?
Neither the smell nor the bacteria may be completely removed by just washing your facecloth in cold or hot water.
To completely eliminate the smell facecloths, need to be washed in the hottest water possible. Sudsy ammonia will act as a grease and oil cutter, and if you choose this way then no other detergent is necessary.
Ideally you should wash your facecloths in the washing machine using vinegar in the machine.
This will also help prevent bacteria building up in the machine and keeping it sanitary. This way you can prevent mildew and bacteria from spreading back to your facecloths, towels and even clothing.
Add all the towels to your face cloths and use the regular washing machine cycle with very warm or hot water, add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle.
Another option is to use baking soda which will remove the musty smell. This is also great for keeping towels smelling fresh.
Note: if you want to avoid as much mold and bacteria as possible then you may want to change your face cloth daily, rather than wash the same one every day. Keep a selection of facecloths and add them to the laundry load after you have used them.
