If you have ever been with a client who lives in a rural area then the chances are that the property works with a septic tank system. Now while this may be a daunting thing to find out, taking care of the septic tank is not that complicated. It does however, require some forethought of what products are used and what are not suitable.
You will find that there are pipes running from the house out towards the tank. These are placed underground and connected to the tank by an inlet pipe. Because the way the tank works is by allowing bacteria to break down any contents, it is vital that nothing goes into the tank to prevent this process.
Too much water can wash the contents out of the tank before they are broken down. This can cause a health hazard and leave the area around the tank smelling like a sewer.
One way to stop this is to refrain from taking your shower while the washing machine is running. This will prevent a double load of water from entering the tank and flushing out untreated waste.
For a septic tank to work well, there needs to be a healthy population of bacteria. Any septic tank which is left unused for long lengths of time can become ineffective, so don’t be afraid to use the washing machine or dishwasher. Just do not use them all at once.
All the cleaning products should be phosphate free as these do no harm to the system. Phosphates are not broken down so will eventually pass through the system and end up in waterways, ponds or lakes.
There is a great range of septic tank systems products which will not be harmful to the tank and these are readily available in most supermarkets or even online.
While it may seem unimportant to take care of the septic tank system, it is cheaper to keep it running well than to damage it and need it emptied more frequently, or even need to replace it.
