How to handle styes in eyes

Styes are very tender bumps which normally develop on the outer edge of the eyelid, although they do sometimes occur on the inner edges. They can feel like red, hot bumps, and can be very painful or at the very least uncomfortable.

Styes happen because old oil, dead skin cells or old bacteria manage to block one of the oil glands. You may notice that your eyes water a lot more or even swell slightly.

Normally, styes will go away on their own without us doing anything to them, but there are one or two things that can help to relieve the discomfort associated with them.

Apply a warm compress

Ideally you should use filtered water although you can use water that has boiled and cooled down so that it is not too hot.

Soak a clean cloth in the water and place over the affected eye. Have your eye closed when you do this.

If possible keep the compress on for 10 to 15 minutes at a time and repeat several times during the day.

Not only will this help to unplug the oil gland, it will ease the pain and inflammation.

There is a suggestion that using a tea bag soaked in warm water will also relieve the discomfort but there is no substance to back this up.

Try coconut oil

Coconut oil helps to promote eye health and it can do this by reducing inflammation. It is also antibacterial and antifungal and completely safe to use around the eyes.

Place a small amount of coconut oil onto a cotton swab or even a clean finger and lightly rub onto the affected eyelid.

Leave for 15 minutes and rinse off with warm water. If possible repeat this 3 to 5 times a day.

Important notes

  • Avoid touching then stye or trying to squeeze it.
  • Don't wear makeup or contact lenses until it is healed.

Final thoughts

If you leave the stye alone and do absolutely nothing to it, you should find that it goes away on its own within one or two weeks. Should you find that it hangs on for much longer than this, you should have it checked out by your doctor.
