How to handle split ends of hair

Split ends are not attractive as they can start to look as if a rope has started to unravel. They happen when hair becomes dry and brittle. The ends start to fray and look unsightly.

Often when live-in carers are taking time to care for their clients, they forget about things like split ends because there are literally too many other things to worry about. But, sooner or later, you will notice that the ends of your hair have started to fray and look extremely tatty.

What causes split ends?

Split ends happen when hair is exposed to extreme conditions, whether this is inside a house or outside in the elements. They are also caused by blow drying the hair too often and using chemical products which are too harsh.

It is good to understand that everyone gets split ends in their hair, in fact, they are very common and most people will have to deal with them at one stage or another.

How do we get rid of split ends?

Unfortunately, split ends can never be repaired. The only reliable way to get rid of them is to cut them off. There are, however, some things you can do to make them less noticeable.

Candle cutting

You may have seen that one of the latest trends to get rid of split ends is velaterapia, also known as candle cutting.

Candle cutting is done by taking a section of hair and twisting it, then singeing it with a lighted candle. The thinking behind this is that the singeing of the ends somehow creates a seal to protect the ends from splitting again.

While you may agree with this, experts feel that this practice can cause the ends to split even further and possibly damage hair follicles.

If you want to try candle cutting them it is best done by a professional as you may do more damage if you try this alone.

Hair masks

While hair masks are often advertised as a repair method for split ends, they basically only conceal the ends, and moisturise the hair. They may improve the appearance of your hair but they do not actually stick the ends together.

How can we disguise split ends?

  • Leave in conditioners. Use the type that has nourishers for your hair
  • Sweet almond oil. This is used to hydrate the hair and is rubbed into strands leaving them looking unsplit.
  • Use panthenol. This helps to strengthen hair and keeps it moisturised, also improving the texture of damaged hair.
  • Try argan oil. This is an excellent moisturiser as it gives a deep moisture and adds shine. Use a few drops on split ends, rub them in and comb out.

Final thoughts

It is very likely that in the day to day routine with a client we forget to take care of our own hair conditioning.

While you are waiting for that all important trim, there are some things to do to make your hair feel silky and manageable, with not too much time spent on it. They don’t take up a lot of time and are well worth the effort to feel comfortable with your hair.
