Pink eye is another name for viral conjunctivitis and most cases of this are mild although they can be painful. The infection will normally clear up without any help within a week or at most two weeks. However, in some cases it can take up to 4 weeks to clear.
Your doctor can prescribe an antiviral medication, normally eye drops or gel, to treat this. Be aware that antibiotics do not clear viral conjunctivitis because they are not effective against viruses.
There is another eye issue that is easily confused with viral conjunctivitis, namely bacterial conjunctivitis. A mild case of this will often improve on its own within 2 to 5 days although a doctor may prescribe an antibiotic in the form of eye drops or ointment.

This is caused by allergens like animal dander and pollen. Once the allergen has been removed the condition clears up. For this condition your doctor or chemist may give you eye drops which are antihistamines which will give relief from the itchiness.
There are some things you can do before you resort to calling the doctor. Try using cold compresses and artificial tears to relieve the dryness and inflammation. You can buy these at any chemist without a prescription.
