How to handle gas leaks and carbon monoxide issues

In houses where we are unfamiliar with different heating methods, a gas leak can be very concerning, particularly if you do not know what to do about it.

Should you smell gas – and yes, you will know what it smells like, it is very distinctive – there is a number you should call right away.

0800 111 999

All calls to this number are recorded and may be monitored.

If you smell gas:

  • Do not light any matches or smoke
  • Leave electrical switches as they are, do not turn off and on
  • Open doors and windows
  • Unless the gas meter is in the cellar, turn it off at the control handle
  • Call the emergency number – 0800 111 999

On your arrival at your placement, it is always a good idea to ask about the last inspection dates of gas appliances. Boilers should be serviced every year and there should be a certificate to show the last inspection date.

Keep an eye on boilers as faults often occur here.

A faulty boiler will have:

  • Soot around the area
  • A weak orange or yellow flame instead of a bright blue flame
  • A pilot light which easily blows out

Carbon monoxide can be fatal because many people may not be aware of it. Older people may not have a good sense of smell any more and may simply put symptoms down to old age or flu.

Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include:

  • Light headedness
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Shortness of breath

If there is a carbon monoxide alarm and it goes off, or you think there may be a leak:

  • Switch off all appliances at once, open all doors and windows to start ventilating the place
  • Get out of the house in a calm manner
  • Call the emergency number – 0800 111 999
  • Do not re-enter the house until it has been checked and is safe
  • Get yourself and your client checked out because you may not realize that you have been affected. Simply going outside will not treat any exposure which has taken place.

Final thoughts

Both gas and carbon monoxide leaks can be fatal so never hesitate to call if your smell or suspect either of them.
