How to handle chapped lips

Most of the time chapped lips are harmless although occasionally they can be due to medication or a sign of a medical condition.

If your client develops chapped lips for no apparent reason, then you may want to have them see their doctor to confirm all is well. Once that is confirmed there are some things we can do to heap chapped lips.

To prevent and treat chapped lips

  • Opt for non-irritating lip products which contain castor seed oil, mineral oil or ceramides. It also helps to use products which are fragrance free and labelled hypoallergenic.
  • Avoid lip balm which contains menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus as these can irritate the sensitive skin on lips. It is also a good idea to stop using any product that causes the lips to tingle or sting.
  • Use daily and at nighttime. Ointment helps to seal in the moisture for longer than oils and waxes.
  • Keep skin hydrated. Using a humidifier during the night will help, as will drinking plenty of water.
  • Avoid picking, biting, and pulling pieces of rough skin. This will not help but only serve to irritate the lips further. Instead of licking your lips, apply a lip balm.

Final thoughts

If excessive chapped lips do not clear up within two or three weeks, you may want to go back to the doctor to make sure that there is no underlying reason. The doctor may be able to prescribe a medicated ointment or refer to a dermatologist.
