Many people were afraid of the dark as children, and while most of us grow out of this, there are some clients we may care for who still feel trepidation at the darkness or seem to be awake with no reason.
In fact, one of the most common times when people feel anxious is at night. Clinical trials have shown that sleep deprivation may be a trigger for anxiety and mental issues.
Nighttime panic attacks can be episodes of extreme fear and are often accompanied by manifestations such as:
• Increased heart rate and chest pains
• Shortness of breath, throat tightness
• Sweating and chills
• Hot flashes
• Lightheadedness and dizziness
• A sense of impending doom.
Why is my client awake at night?
While medication may be one cause, there are several reasons why your client is still awake in the wee hours.
A mind that is racing and simply cannot switch off will easily lead to sleeplessness. In clients who do not have cognitive issues, worrying about things that have happened as well as what will happen in the future may keep them wide awake.
There are also underlying conditions which may lead to sleeplessness and therefore anxiety, namely:
• Diabetes
• Heart disease
• Certain brain tumours
• Hyperthyroidism
• Chronic pain
• Irritable bowel syndrome
If your client suffers from any of these then most likely the doctor is already treating them with medication, which may also cause sleeplessness.
Your first action, if your client cannot sleep reasonably well through the night is to speak to the doctor. Often the doctor will prescribe medication which does not interfere with others. One of the more common medications are antidepressants.
Look at forming healthy sleeping habits such as:
• Daily exercise (if possible)
• Developing a sleep schedule
• Avoiding stimulants before bed
• Turning off electronics
• Crating a comfortable space – warm and cosy
Final thoughts
Lack of sleep or insomnia is very difficult for both client and carer because, rest assured, if your client is awake and anxious, you will very likely be called through the night.
Sleepless nights will make it extremely difficult for you to focus and work at your best through the day, particularly if they continue.
It is important that you speak to the doctor if sleepless nights continue for more than a few days. If not, you may find that your own health deteriorates, and your work suffers.
