This is always a controversial subject so right at the outset, it is wise to say that ideally, we should not crush tablets with the intent to disguise them from our clients. However, there are exceptions to every rule, and crushing and disguising tablets is one of them.
The best way for our client to take their medication is to swallow the tablets with water or have prescribed them in liquid form.
Before you crush a tablet, you should first talk to the doctor and make sure that he agrees. Better still, ask him to add a note to your client’s files to say that he has given his permission for the tablets to be crushed and disguised.
So, having received permission to crush and disguise tablets, let’s look at some ways to get put client to successfully take their medication.
Add to soft foods
Yogurt is the most common food for adding crushed tablets. Puddings will also work. Often chocolate will be best because of the pronounced flavor of the chocolate. For tablets that have a bitter taste, adding them to a lemon dessert seems to mask the bitterness.
Any pureed fruit may be a good disguise, particularly banana and strawberry. Oatmeal will also work if your client enjoys this.
Soft cheese
Cream cheese, cottage cheese and pimento cheese are good examples of strong food flavors which will disguise tablets.
Dips
If your client enjoys dips such as salsa, guacamole, and cheese dips then you may be able to mix the crushed tablets in with these. You will need to make sure that they eat the entire dip so that they don’t leave any tablet behind so make small portions to ensure that they finish it all by themselves.
Puddings
Most people love puddings, and this makes them a great vehicle for adding crushed tablets. Mix with ice cream, custard, mousse, and in fact any pudding that your client enjoys eating.
Final thoughts
Although this is not the ideal way to take medication, if the doctor has agreed to it, then try any of these to encourage your client to take their tablets. It is important that you always ask the doctor first, never assume that they will agree, and if possible, get it added to your client’s file.
