Fungal infections are quite common, and although they are unsightly, they are not classed as serious. They do, however take a long time to treat.
Although they are most common on toenails, you can also get a fungal infection on the fingernails.
They often start at the edges of the nails but can spread inwards, making the nails discolored and thicker looking.
Nails can become brittle and break off, and occasionally the entire nail will lift off. This can cause swelling and pain in the area.
Note: If your client has Diabetes, you should ask the GP first about any treatment for fungal infection on the nails.
Ask the pharmacist
They may suggest an antifungal cream which you apply to the infected area. This is a lengthy process and can take up to a year to completely work.
Another method is to treat the nail with a softening cream which can be used to soften the nail and make it easy to rub the infected part off.
Medications
Antifungal drugs
The doctor may prescribe antifungal drugs which can either be taken orally or applied to the nail. These are often the first choice when you visit the doctor. Typically, these need to be taken for between 6 – 12 weeks.
Medicated nail cream
This cream is to be rubbed into the infected area and is better done after soaking the feet in warm water.
Medicated nail polish
This is painted onto the nail and reapplied every seven days. This method can also take up to a year to be effective.
Final thoughts
Although hydrogen peroxide is known to kill toenail fungus rapidly, you should always check with the doctor first before resorting to this method.
