If we say a person overstays their welcome, what we mean is that they have stayed far longer than they are expected to.
Families of clients that live-in carers look after are unfortunately notorious for doing this.
Sometimes even neighbours seem to stay far longer than we think is needed and without being rude, we may wonder if they are ever going to go home!
This is a very awkward situation particularly when families are involved, as very often one of them is paying our wages, should our clients be unable to do this. There is a tendency in that situation to leave things as they are, and simply put up with extended visits.
However, when your client is left shattered at the end of a lengthy visit, then it may be time to approach the subject of shorter visiting times.
The easiest way (if there is an easy way) is to approach just one member of the family and talk privately with them.
Be kind and tactful, and explain that their loved one is simply too tired after long visits. You may let them know that it often takes several days for your client to fully recover.
Naturally we do not want to upset anyone who visits the house, but sometimes we have to draw the line and suggest that visiting time is over. Lunch is ready, your client needs to lie down, it is almost bedtime, and the list of reasons could go on.
Occasionally we may come across a neighbour who just does not grasp the concept of short visits, in which case, a blunt statement saying that it really is time to go, may be in order.
Often if you have a chat with a family member you will find that they are completely sympathetic and will happily shorten their visits to stop exhausting your client.
Neighbours also require tact in this situation, particularly as they often feel that they have as much right in the house as the carer. However, you may need to be a little positive about the length of the visit to get the message across.
In both instances, tact and kindness should be at the forefront of your discussion. You may find that they are looking for a way to shorten visits, and this is just what they need.
