How to deal with and prevent hair loss

Losing one’s hair can be distressful and leave you worried. Depending on the type of hair loss there may be ways to reduce hair loss, if not prevent it altogether.

It is perfectly normal to lose hair each day, in fact, most people lose between 50 to 100 hairs a day. You see these when you brush or comb your hair, and most people pay no attention to them at all.

Losing piles of hair can be a sign of a deeper issue and may need medical advice. Additionally, sometimes hair loss runs in the family.

What causes hair loss?

Hair loss can be caused by several things, namely:

  • Illness
  • Stress
  • Treatment for cancer
  • Rapid weight loss
  • Deficiency in iron
  • Hormonal changes
  • Scalp fungal infections

There are other reasons for hair to fall out, such as hairstyles that pull the hair back too tightly as well as haircare which involves bleaching.

Anything that is not normal hair loss should be checked out by a doctor, who may treat for hormonal imbalances and any medical issues. Once the cause has been found, the solution will become clear.

Treatments can include:

  • Over the counter medications which are applied to the scalp
  • Prescription medications
  • Hair transplants

Assuming that your hair loss does not call for transplant, there are some things that will help keep your hair in tip top condition.

  • Check your diet – you need to eat enough calories, including protein and iron
  • Deal with stress – if your days and nights are filled with stress, it may be reflected in hair loss. Try to find a way to reduce stress.
  • Change your hairstyle – choose a style that does not pull your hair back, such as tight ponytails.

When should you see the doctor?

Always see a doctor if:

  • Your scalp burns or itches, or seems irritated
  • You lose body hair as well as head hair
  • You seem to be losing large clumps of hair at the same time

Final thoughts

While losing some hair is normal, when noticing that you are losing excess hair, it is important to be checked out by a doctor as soon as possible to rule out any underlying conditions which need treatment.
