How to deal with a bloody nose

Nosebleeds can be frightening if they are severe. Even if they are mild, they are still a nuisance. Often, they are not a sign of anything serious and can be treated at home.

How to stop a nosebleed

  • Sit down and lean your head slightly back.
  • Firmly pinch the soft part of your nose right above the nostrils. Hold this for 10-15 minutes.
  • Slowly lean forward and breathe through your mouth. This will prevent the blood from draining down the back of your throat.
  • Use an ice pack on your nose. You can even use a pack of frozen vegetables such as peas. Wrap in a tea towel.

Stay upright rather than lying down as this will reduce blood pressure and discourage any more bleeding.

When should you call the doctor?

If you or your client are taking a blood-thinning medication (warfarin) or have a history of clotting disorder.

You experience symptoms such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath or the bleeding does not stop after 20 minutes.

You seem to have regular nosebleeds.

Final thoughts

If you feel you need to see a doctor due to an ongoing nosebleed you may want to have someone else drive you to the surgery, rather than drive yourself.
