How to cook perfect oatmeal

Many of our older clients were brought up on porridge for breakfast, and although these days we have instant oatmeal readily available, there may still be clients who insist on ‘the real thing.’

What do we need?

There are only four ingredients to make good oatmeal, namely:

Old fashioned (or rolled) oats, water, milk, and a dash of salt.

Old fashioned, or rolled oats are pretty similar to steel cut oats but are slightly more pressed/rolled. They tend to be thicker than quick oats and therefore need more time to cook.

How to cook oatmeal on the stove top

  • You should use the same ratio of oats to liquid, so one cup of oats to one cup of liquid.

  • Bring the liquid to the boil. You can use milk, water, or a mixture of them both.

  • Reduce the heat and add the oats, stirring frequently so that the porridge does not catch on the base of the saucepan.

  • Cook for about 5 minutes and season with salt to taste.

And a microwave method if your client has no objections.

The ration here is different, it is 1:2

  • Half a cup of oats to 1 cup water/milk or combination.

  • Add a good pinch of salt

  • Mix all together

  • Place in microwave and do not cover or it will boil over

  • Cook on high for 2 minutes and stir, then serve

Final thoughts

It really does not matter which way you prefer to cook oatmeal, and truthfully, it tastes the same either way.

However, if your client insists that the only way to cook porridge is on the stovetop, then best to do it.

Make sure that as soon as you have dished up the oatmeal you soak the porridge pot before the remains solidify and make cleaning difficult.
