Any spill that happens when you are with your client can be serious and dangerous because there is always a risk that you or your client slip and injure yourselves.
When a liquid is spilled it is important to clean it up right away. Even a dry spill can attract vermin if left uncleaned. While mopping a liquid spill will work, it may not remove all the spill, so it is a good idea to have several cleaning materials on hand for when a spill happens.
Use correct materials
You should have in the store cupboard a selection of the following:
Think about the size
Consider the size of the spill before starting to clean it. Do you have enough paper towels to wipe up a gallon of water? If not, make use of a towel instead.
What was spilled?
If the spill is oil, remember that it is going to be slippery until the area has been properly cleaned. You may need to use plenty of paper towels to mop it up and then use a detergent to clean the residue off the floor so that the area is safe for you and your client.
Dry food that has spilled will tend to scatter so it is important that you clean it all up so that you stop any infestations of rats or ants.
Wear shoes
Ideally you should wear slip resistant shoes while cleaning up the spill. If possible, keep your client out of the way until you feel that the area is safe for them to walk in.
Never clean up spills in bare feet as this is a sure-fire way for you to slip and hurt yourself.
Final thoughts
Spills can be dangerous if not attended to right away. Try to keep your client away from the area until you have cleaned it.
If you have a dry spill, be sure to check in the surrounding area for any remaining spillage. After you have swept dry spills up it is s good idea to mop the entire area with a detergent to make sure that there is no foodstuff on the floor or under cabinets.
