It can be annoying to start the ironing only to find that the underneath of the iron is dirty. This may mean that whatever you are ironing will have baked-on dirt, or even scorch marks.
It is easy to keep the bottom of the iron clean and worth checking it after every use to keep it in good condition.
1. Baking soda paste
Make a paste by using baking soda and a little water. Mix to a paste. Rub on the iron base with a soft brush or towel. Let stand for a few minutes and then wipe off with a wet cloth.
2. Try a newspaper
You may want to wear over mitts for this. Heat the iron up to a high setting and scrunch up the newspaper into balls. Use them to run all over the base of the iron.
3. Acetone nail polish remover
Another great way to clean the iron base. Turn the iron on, let it get hot. Soak a cotton wool ball with nail polish remover and quickly rub all over the base. Once finished, wipe with a clean cloth and water.
4. Use vinegar
Use an old towel and dampen it with vinegar. Wipe all over the base, leave for 30 minutes and then wipe away and dry.
5. Try toothpaste
Rub some white toothpaste onto the base, leave for ten minutes and then wipe off using a damp cloth.
And for the holes...
Use a damp cotton swab for the steam vents. Dip them into a mixture of water and liquid detergent. Insert into the holes and twirl around. Before you know it, you will have a beautiful clean iron again!
